BATTLE CREEK, Mich. — Battle Creek police said Monday that they ruled the deaths of two people at an apartment complex for veterans as a double homicide.

Fred Bissell, 62, and Jason Dush, 41, whom police said were friends but not roommates, were found dead Sunday. Battle Creek Police Chief Jim Blocker said Sunday that investigators consider the deaths suspicious.

In a written statement released Monday, April 13, 2020, police called the deaths a double homicide.

Battle Creek officers said another Silver Star resident found the two men dead about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators were waiting for results from the medical examiner's office before determining a cause of death, but said they found signs of a struggle when they arrived at the apartment.

According to the preliminary investigation, both victims appeared to have been stabbed. Police said they found several knives during the investigation.

"We don't have any, I guess, clear motive. We don't have what we would call clear enemies or anything like that, or somebody with a score to settle with these guys, so, nothing based on either our history, or anything that we know right now that would make a clear motive for somebody to have done it," Detective Sgt. Joel Case said.

Officers notified the families of Bissel and Dush.
