Rex F. Asher, 83, of Battle Creek, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Heartland Rehabilitation Center in Battle Creek. A funeral will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at the Emmett Street Missionary Church, 552 E. Emmett St., Battle Creek, MI 49017, with Pastor Mike McGlynn officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta at 1:30 P.M. Visitation will be held from 5-8 PM on Tuesday, October 2, 2018 at the Lighthouse of Athens, located at 310 S. Capital Avenue, Athens, MI 49011.
Rex was born on May 20, 1935 in Hyden, Kentucky to Beige and Nancy (Fields) Asher. He graduated from Hyden High School in Kentucky and entered the
U.S. Army in 1959. He served honorably and was discharged in
August of 1961.
He came to Michigan as a young man and lived in the Battle Creek area most of his life. He had been married to Maritha Clark, now deceased, Nancy Doolittle, who is the mother of his children, and in 1994 he married Tracy (Mundon) Moore. She preceded him in death in 2007.
Mr. Asher was employed at St. Regis Paper Co. in Marshall many years ago, drove truck and worked at Total Foods in Battle Creek for several years. In his free time, he loved fishing. Rex had a real heart for the ministry. He and his brothers had a gospel band called The Harvesters for Christ, which played at many area churches and on Sundays at the Haven of Rest in Battle Creek. He had served as pastor to many in the area and attended many churches through the years, including; Morgan Road Church of the Nazarene, Garrison Hills Wesleyan Church, Emmett Street Missionary Church and Rhema Word Outreach Center in Battle Creek.
Rex is survived by his children Terry (Janice) Asher of Battle Creek, Mary (Bruce) Stanton of Union City, April (Richie Rose) Asher of Battle Creek, Peter (Pam) Asher of Battle Creek, his step-children Edward (Kim) Moore of Cleveland, OH and Annalicia (Terry) Alexander of FL, his brother Charles Edward Asher of Battle Creek, his grandchildren Cheryl Asher, Michael Asher, Ashley Asher, Travis Asher, Terry Asher, Andrew Stanton, Levi Stanton, William Richard Rose III, Lindsey Rose, Hayden Asher, Lance Asher, Dayson Asher, Sidney Moore, Austin Moore, another Austin Moore, Makenzie Moore, and Kendal (Logan) Blankenship, his great-grandchildren Andrew, Blake and Mariana, his best friend Randy Derksen of Allegan, and many nieces & nephews. In addition to his second wife, Maritha, and his last wife, Tracy, he was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Hillard, Ardill, Jesse, “Mac”, Watt, James Pearl and Steve Allen Asher.
